[ARCHIVED] Easy Ways to Cut Down on Food Waste

Zero Waste Graphic

Reducing organic waste can save you money and help you get the most out of your groceries. It doesn’t take big changes—just a few smart habits. Follow these six simple steps to cut down on waste and make better use of the food you bring home.

  1. Focus on Reduction First Before Disposal

The solution starts with the way we purchase. Overbuying and stockpiling can lead to unnecessary waste and disposal problems.

  1. Prep Before Shopping

Make a list of meals for the week and the food needed. Buy only the fresh produce you will eat in a week.

  1. Organize Your Refrigerator

Look at what needs to be eaten first. Put those items in front. Place food groups together so they are easier to find.

  1. Storing Your Produce
    • Store leftovers in clear containers so you can see them easily.
    • Keep produce dry. Remember to it wash before eating.
    • Store your fruits and vegetables in containers or bags that will help them stay fresh longer.
  2. Preserve Your Food

Explore ways to preserve extra food and extend its life. Here are some options you can try:

  • Freeze leftovers or extra produce
  • Juice fruits and vegetables
  • Pickle or ferment to preserve flavor and nutrients
  • Dry, hang dry, or vacuum pack for storage
  • Can fruits, veggies, or sauces
  • Cure meats or certain vegetables

Look online for tutorials to get started.

  1. Repurpose Your Food Scraps

Instead of throwing away your unwanted food scraps, try a few of these ideas:

  • Replant roots from lettuces, onions, celery, potatoes and other veggies.
  • Refresh wilted vegetables in cold water to bring them back to life.
  • Use leftovers to make soups and broths.
  • Boil bones to make stock.
  • Make smoothies with overly ripe produce.
  • Turn stale bread into croutons.
  • Add hot water to apple peals for a tasty tea.
  • Use citrus zest to clean your garbage disposal.
  • Shine up silverware by soaking it in sour milk.
  • Clean your stove top with squeezed lemon halves.
  • Adding cucumber peels to your bath can potentially offer relief for  itchy skin.
