[ARCHIVED] COVID-19 Variant Identified in St. Croix County

New Richmond, WI: St. Croix County Public Health was notified that a teenage individual recently tested positive for the COVID-19 variant B.1.1.7. This is the variant that was first discovered in England during November and December of 2020. Researchers believe that this variant spreads more rapidly and easily than the original strain of the virus that causes COVID-19. This is the first confirmed case of a COVID-19 variant in St. Croix County.

The individual who tested positive only had contact with their family while they were infectious. Public Health notified the individual and family, who are taking the proper safety precautions. To protect their privacy, we will not be releasing their names.

All viruses, including the virus that causes COVID-19, change through mutation. New variants of the virus are expected to occur over time. Over 70 confirmed cases of the B.1.1.7 variant have been found in Wisconsin.

“With new variants in our state, it is critical to continue public health practices and prevent the spread of COVID-19. Vaccines are the latest tool we have to the fight this virus. Our entire healthcare community is committed to provide a vaccine to everyone who wants one” said Kelli Engen, St. Croix County Health Officer.

To help keep our community safe, St. Croix County Public Health asks that you:

  • Wear a mask
  • Practice physical distancing
  • Stay home when you are sick
  • Wash your hands frequently
  • Get tested if you have symptoms or are a close contact
  • And, get vaccinated when a vaccine is available for you

Where can I find more information?

The best place to find local information about COVID-19 is the St. Croix County website. You can find more information about the variants on the Wisconsin Department of health Services (DHS) website.
