New Funding to Help Restore Kinnickinnic River

St. Croix County Land and Water Conservation has secured a Surface Water Grant from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to implement Best Management Practices (BMPs) in the Kinnickinnic River watershed, a critical step forward in protecting this world-class trout stream. This funding, totaling over $375,000 in cost-share support, will help farmers install conservation practices such as: cover crops, nutrient management plans, grassed waterways, buffer strips, sediment basins, streambank improvements. These efforts will reduce sediment and nutrient runoff into the river and ultimately benefit Lake St. Croix downstream.

Nitrate Screening Clinics

Nitrate Screening Clinics Remain Popular

St. Croix County’s June nitrate screening clinic in Baldwin drew 126 participants, with 37% of untreated samples testing above the federal health standard of 10 mg/L. These results are higher than the county average, highlighting the importance of regular well water testing, especially for households relying on private wells. Free nitrate screenings will continue throughout the summer and fall at locations across the county.  The clinics are coordinated by St Croix County Land and Water Conservation and Public Health.

Upcoming clinics:

Tuesday, August 12th, 2025 | 1:00–5:00 PM | Deer Park Library – 112 Front Street West, Deer Park

Thursday, September 11th, 2025 | 1:00–5:00 PM | St. Croix County Services Center – 1752 Dorset Lane, New Richmond

Streambank Stabilization After Photo

Streambank Stabilization

A once-degraded stream brought back to life

Stream conditions running through Dave Phillips property had degraded over time from sedimentation and establishment of non-native vegetation.  To restore conditions suitable for trout in the stream - St. Croix County Land and Water Conservation staff designed a streambank restoration project to restore nearly 600 feet of streambank.  Funding was obtained from WI-DNR’s Targeted Runoff Management Grant Program and landowner match.
